Sossusvlei / Sesriem : Travel Information and Accommodation

Access to Sossusvlei Various routes lead to the Namib Naukluft Park with the dune fields of the Sossusvlei. From Windhoek you'd best take the B1 up to Rehoboth and turn right there into the C24 direction Solitaire via Spreetshoogte Pass. Behind the pass, turn left onto the C14 to the turn-off to Sesriem.
Sesriem restcamp lies about 65 km from Sossusvlei (1 hour's drive). On the last 4 km to the vlei, the road consists of very soft sands and can only be managed with a 4x4 or by foot. Before sunset one must have returned to Sesriem. For the last stretch to the vlei, switch the 4x4 into four-wheel mode, turn the wheel hubs on and reduce tyre pressure to make them soft and wide. Caution: Don't forget to pump them up again afterwards. Drive in a low range mode (high revs) to the 4x4 parking lot.
If you don't have a 4x4 at your disposal, proceed from the parking area for 2x4's either by foot (appr. 4 kilometres) or rent a shuttle. IMPORTANT: Be back in Sesriem before sunset.
Entry Fees per Day Adults: N$ 80 Children (6 - 16): free Vehicles (max 10 seats): N$ 10

Sesriem Restcamp There is a very nice NWR restcamp in Sesriem. The campsites lie in full shade under huge camelthorn trees. The fee for camping per night is 150 N$ per person (maximum of 8 persons). In total, there are only 24 campsites. Sesriem restcamp has a swimming pool, bar, petrol station and a small tuck shop. It makes sense to buy your groceries in Windhoek or Swakopmund, respectively.
Sossus Dune Lodge Since 2007 there is also a comfortable lodge within the park. Guests benefit from being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and stay until after sunset. On their return after an exhilarating day, relax in the tranquility and splendor of the Namib Desert, under the spectacular African sky. The lodge offers 23 chalets, restaurant, bar and swimming pool. Rates for full board: double N$1800 per person/night and N$2300 single.

Namib Sky Balloon Safaris A balloon flight over the Namib desert is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have when travelling Namibia. Due to the strong thermal winds in the desert, you take off as early as sunrise. The peace and serenity that surrounds you, once the balloon has levelled off, is absolutely magical. At the height of about 100 ft you drift noiselessly over an ocean of sand dunes. The first ray of the sun bathe the desert in a fascinating red and warm light.
Photo: Sunrise over the Namib just after the launch. The sensation of quietly drifting over the dunes is just magical.
