Gibeon
The little village Gibeon lies 65 km south of Mariental at the spring of the Fish River. Gibeon is one of the early Nama settlements in the south, originating from the times of the first missionaries in Namibia. The Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi had his residence here. Witbooi rose in 1904 - the Hereros were defeated already - against the German colonial forces. The German geologist Range discovered in 1911 that once meteorites had hit the area around Gibeon. He found many little pieces, some of which are exhibited today in the pedestrian passage in Windhoek. |
