Hardap Dam Resort
The state-owned restcamp at the dam can be accessed via Pad 93, which turns 15 km north of Mariental off the B1. After 6 km you get to the gate; open from 6h00 to 23h00.
Accommodation in the Hardap Rest Camp is plain, but clean and affordable. In summer it gets rather hot in the self-catering chalets. The camping ground is beautifully positioned under shady trees. The restaurant is open from 7h00 to 8h30, from 12h00 to 12h30 and from 18h00 to 20h30.
Angling is permitted in the lake, which is teeming with fish, amongst others, carp and rock-cod. The angling licence is available at the park office. Tel 063-240381.

Photo: "Stop for Breakfast" – a makeshift take-aways stand of two young Nama women at the B1 near Gibeon. This region of Namibia is particularly poverty-stricken.
The little village Gibeon lies 65 km south of Mariental at the spring of the Fish River. Gibeon is one of the early Nama settlements in the south, originating from the times of the first missionaries in Namibia. The Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi had his residence here. Witbooi rose in 1904 - the Hereros were defeated already - against the German colonial forces. The German geologist Range discovered in 1911 that once meteorites had hit the area around Gibeon. He found many little pieces, some of which are exhibited today in the pedestrian passage in Windhoek.
