Entry to Botswana
 Buitepos / Mamuno Border Post
The border with Botswana lies 110 kilometres east of Gobabis. On the Namibian side the border post is called Buitepos, on the Botswana side Mamuno. From the border it is about 500 road kilometres to Maun, on a tarred road. More information in the Gobabis Info page.
Maun Airport
The airport of Maun in Botswana (IATA: MUB) is serviced from Windhoek by Air Namibia and Air Botswana. From here depart charter flights with small aircraft to various destinations in the Okavango Delta, to the Chobe National Park and to Victoria Falls. The airport disposes of a 2000 metre long tarred runway, 35 km from town. There are taxis and shuttle busses at the airport.
Sights in Maun
The Nhabe Museum mainly exhibits arts&crafts from the area and informs on flora and fauna in Botswana. It is open daily except for Sundays. Also of interest: the Maun Educational Park at the eastern bank of the Thamalakane River. The park with 2,5 sq km informs on the fauna of Botswana. Various antelopes, giraffes, zebras and many other animals are to be seen in the park. |
Moremi Game Reserve
This famous reserve, 100 kilometres north of Maun, is teeming with game. The access first follows the tarred road to Shorobe and from there you proceed on a gravel road. After the control post at the Veterinary Control Fence the track becomes rough and sandy, and only 4x4 can drive it. The landscape is wonderfully African, through Mopane and Acacia bushland with yellow-gold grass savannah in between. After some 30 kilometres you reach the Khwai River with the park office.
 Coming from the north, one must first cross the shockingly wobbly, but picturesque Khwai River Bridge, entirely made from Mopane planks and often flooded.
In Khwai there is a very basic, but clean public campground, In the entire Moremi Game Reserve there is no fuel for sale and hardly any groceries either. One should stock up in Maun beforehand.
For the Moremi malaria prophylaxis is advised.
