Tikoloshe Afrika
The art centre in Omaruru is definitely worth a visit. A great variety of remarkable wood carvings are created here and sold in different places of Namibia. They are also exported nowadays. Some of the objects are huge, up to 10 metres high. Withered dry roots and trunks are used, mostly hundreds and thousands of years old. The wood is collected in the semi-desert in the north of Namibia.
Visitors can watch the wood sculptors at work. Most of them come from the Kavango region, where wood-carving is rooted in the tradition. The area produces many talented craftsmen. They practice carving from childhood. The motives are exclusively African.
The sculptures reflect the African Spirit, the rich treasure of African mythology, the way of thinking and perceiving. The Tikolosh for example is an important figure from the mythology. It is a little goblin, very small, about 20 cm tall, whom many people in southern Africa fear. The Tikolosh (or Tokolosh) is active mainly at night. He moves around on the ground and is up to a lot of mischief, including sexual assaults on sleeping women. Tikoloshe are invisible for grown-ups. Only some children can see them and the sangomas, traditional healers. These have the means to banish the Tikoloshe through certain rituals.
The authenticity of the sculptures at Tikoloshe Afrika enthuse collectors and art lovers all over the world. More information on the Website.
