Organ Pipes
The basalt columns called Organ Pipes are up to 5 metres high and are 20 million years old. Lava drang under high pressure into the slate layers. The erosion of millions of years took the slate off and exposed the basalt intrusion. The columns stand south-east of Twyfelfontein. Take the D3214 back and turn right (to the south) into the D3254. The columns stand below the road alongside a gorge.

Petrified Forest
The "Petrified Forest" lies 40 kilometres west of Khorixas at the C39. You will see 280 million year old petrified tree trunks. They are amazingly well preserved and one can even recognise the annual rings. In 1950 the area was declared a national monument.

Ugab Terraces and Vingerklip
Driving along the C39 from Khorixas to Outjo, one shouldn't miss out on a beautiful nature sight. 45 kilometres behind Khorixas turn right on to the D2743 to the sign-posted Vingerklip. The bizarre rock formation, 35 metres high with a circumference of 44 metres, lies on the Farm Bertram. The rock was only climbed for the first time in 1970. Since then, many people have been up there and in 1973 even a freeclimber. One can walk up to the foot of the rock and enjoy the spectacular view over the Ugab Rivier's wide valley with its perfectly smooth table mountains; a dramatic scene that resembles Monument Valley in Arizona.
Access to the Kaokoveld Region
A popular and very scenic stretch from Khorixas to the Kaokoveld is the C39 and C43 rooute via Palmwag up to Fort Sesfontein. Near Warmquelle one can take a refreshing bath in a rockpool at the Ongongo waterfall.

Fort Sesfontein was an outpost during the German colonial era to control the Swartbooi Namas. The small fort was manned only by a few Schutztruppe soldiers who had to provide for themselves. They laid out a vegetable patch, planted date palms, and even tried to grow wheat. The fort was abandoned in the First World War. Investors restored the old fort in the nineties of last century and transformed it into a lodge as a gateway to Kaokoland.
