Namib Naukluft Park
|
AccessVarious routes lead to the Namib Naukluft Park esp. to the dune fields of the Sossusvlei. From Windhoek you'd best take the B1 up to Rehoboth and turn right there into the C24 in the direction of Solitaire via Spreetshoogte Pass. Behind the pass, turn left onto the C14 to the turn-off to Sesriem.
Sesriem lies about 65 km from Sossusvlei (1 hour's drive). On the last 4 km to the vlei, the road consist of very soft sands and can only be managed in a 4x4 or by foot. Before sunset one must have returned to Sesriem.

Sesriem RestcampThere is a very nice NWR restcamp in Sesriem. The campsites lie in full shade under huge camelthorn trees. The fee for camping per night is 300 N$ per site plus 150 N$ per person for a maximum of 8 persons. In total, there are only 24 campsites. Sesriem also has a petrol station and a tuck shop so it makes sense to buy your groceries in Windhoek.

Namib Sky Balloon FlightsA balloon flight over the Namib desert is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have when travelling Namibia. Due to the strong thermal winds in the desert, you take off as early as sunrise. The peace and the quiet that surrounds you, once the balloon has levelled off, is absolutely magical. At the height of about 100 ft you drift noiselessly over an ocean of dunes. The first ray of the sun bathe the desert in a fascinating red and warm light.
