Travel Advice for the Orange River Area
|
Noordoewer
The border post is always open. Its telephone number is 063-297122. The formalities are usually quick and unproblematic, also in Vioolsdrif on the South African side.
Shopping is limited in Noordoewer and in Vioolsdrif but there is accommodation available. The nearest bigger town in South Africa is Springbok, 80 kilometres south on the N7.
At present the construction of a big dam near Vioolsdrif is in discussion.
C13 to Rosh Pinah
The road along the Orange River to the mining town of Rosh Pinah is about 160 km long and is usually in good condition. If you drive carefully, you don't need a 4x4. One should, however, make inquiries to the police in Noordoewer about the condition of the road, especially if it has been raining. There is - except the new Norotshama River Resort - no accommodation along the road and no petrol stations or shops either. But wild camping is possible. From Rosh Pinah it is another 170 km on a gravel road before you hit the tarred B4 in Aus. |
