Orange River
Namibia

It was the Orange River that was responsible for the diamond deposits along the Namibian coast. Over millions of years it transported diamonds from the volcanic pipes in Kimberley in South Africa to the sea. From there, the currents took them northward and the surf deposited them into the dune fields of the Namib.

Orange RiverFrom Noordoewer a sandy road, often running directly along the river, leads to the mining town of Rosh Pinah. This stretch is one of the most beautiful routes in Namibia. There is free camping almost anywhere along the river.

Prohibited diamond zoneTo the west, the diamond prohibited zone begins and it stretches across a vast area along the Namibian coast. You could really find diamonds here, which is why it is prohibited to stop in the area or even leave the road. Not so long ago, new extensive diamond deposits were discovered on the farm Aussenkehr on the Oranje.

Oranjemund, situated in the mouth of the Orange River, is closed to all visitors. It is not possible to cross the border to Alexander Bay in South Africa.
