War Prison Camp
4 kilometres south of Aus, on the C13 Pad to Rosh Pinah lies the camp for the prisoners of war. After the German Schutztruppe had surrendered in July 1915 to the South African troups, about 1500 men were interned here. They lived in tents for a year and were exposed to the extreme weather conditions without protection. Many fell ill and died. Eventually they built their own houses from self-fired clay bricks. Only 4 years later, in 1919, after the peace treaty of Versailles was signed, were the prisoners released. Today there are only some stoneheaps left from the settlement and a commemorative tablet.
Namib Wild Horses
The real attraction of the area are the wild horses of Garub. The wooden visitors' station near the waterhole is well visible from the B4 and there is a signpost at the access drive. At present there are only about 100 wild horses in the Garub area. Some years ago there were many more, but due to a severe drought, the government had many of them captured and sold. There is no ranger at the station and no entrance fee.

There is a delightful stopover at the farm Klein-Aus Vista. The access road turns off the B4, 2 kms west of Aus. The farm is very rustic with nicely furnished natural stone chalets dotted across a breathtaking landscape. Although the chalets have kitchens, meals are also served at the restaurant in the main lodge. Good camping facilities are available. Klein-Aus offers tours and horseriding trips and the area makes for good hiking. Highly recommendable. eMail
From Aus it takes an hour to get to Luederitz. Just before Luederitz, the B4 leads through the drift sand dunes of the Namib. Even when the wind is not very strong, the air is full of sand and sometimes the road is covered with sand which must be cautiously circumnavigated. In a sandstorm, one should protect the headlights with cellotape.
