Shambyu Catholic Mission
The first missionaries arrived relatively late - around 1910 - in the Kavango region and founded the mission station Nyangana. More followed soon, in 1914 Andara, in 1927 Tondoro, in 1929 Bunya. In 1930 the Catholic Shambyu Mission was founded 30 km east of Rundu at the Okavango River. This mission is completely self-sufficient. Besides the dwellings, it has a school, numerous workshops, a hospital, extended vegetable gardens, stables for the cattle and a church at its centre. The missions were enclaves of prosperity. They offered work, education and medical care and attracted many Kavango people from Angola. For a long time they were the only development aid organisations in the Kavango region.

The Kavango consist of five tribes, Kwangali, Mbunza, Gciriku, Mbukushu and Shambyu. Traditionally they live on fish from the Okavango, grow millet and maize for themselves and keep cattle and goats. Shambyu (Sambyu) also has a museum for the mission history and the Kavango people. Many collector's items from the local arts&crafts production are available. Postal address: P.O. Box 2075, Shambyu, Okavango, Namibia. Visits to the mission and the nuseum must be telephonically arranged. Tel: (+264-67372) 1111.
