Ruacana Waterfalls
Ruacana FallsFrom Oshakati the tarred C46 leads to the Ruacana Waterfalls on the Kunene, some 210 kilometres to the west. The waterfalls are not very impressive, because most of the water is diverted through the turbines of the Ruacana Waterpower Plant. The plant was constructed co-operatively by South Africa and Angola and completed in 1975. It is Namibia's main producer of energy.

One can drive from Ruacana along the Kunene to Swartbooisdrift and further along to the stunningly beautiful Epupa Falls at the Kunene. But this stretch is rough, partially sandy, partially rocky and only negotiable in a 4x4. If you don't have a four-wheel drive, you can turn off to the C35, which circumvenes the Etosha Park in the west down to Kamanjab, on to the C 41 to Opuwo, the gate to the Kaokoveld. But to carry on from Opuwo into Kaokoland, you also need a 4x4 and special equipment.

You find more information on our Kaokoland page.

Travel Information

Olukonda National Monument
The former Finnish mission station in Olukonda can be visited coming from Tsumeb, if you turn south at the crossing Oniipa-Onandjokwe-Eenhana, 8 km before Ondangwa and another 5 km on the sand road.

Martti RautanenThe Finnish missionary Rev. Martti Rautanen (Nakambale) came here in 1880 and stayed until his death in 1926. Dr. Rautanen translated the bible into the Ndonga language. He and his family are buried in the cemetery of the thatched mission church from 1889 together with many kings of the Ondonga Kingdom. The church building is now a National Monument under the care of the Lutheran church.

NakambaleIn 1995, the Nakambale Museum was opened next to the old church. It exhibits historical documents of the mission and of the cultures in Ovamboland. One can also see a replica of a traditional Ndonga Kraal and taste traditional Ovambo food while gaining insight into the Ovambo way of life. Accommodation is offered in traditional huts. There are also camping sites. Local guides offer tours of the surrounding area.
