Chobe National Park
Information

Accommodation rates Botswana
Generally, Botswana is a high-price country for tourists. It wants to attract few, but lucrative tourists, also for ecological reasons. Accommodation in the parks is usually run by private concessionaries. Therefore, one has to face high rates for staying at lodges in the Chobe Park and anywhere else in Botswana.

Camping in the Chobe Natonal Park
The rates for camping are just as high, while little luxury is being offered. An exception is the Ihaha Campsite (GPS co-ordinates 17°50.487' S, 24°52.745' E) at the Chobe River near Kasane. The camp disposes of beautiful, shady stands and good, clean sanitation.

Pre-Booking
Accommodation in public restcamps in the Chobe National Park must be booked in advance. One cannot just turn up. Booking through the public reservations office in Gaborone, PO Box 131, Tel 00267 580774, Fax 00267 580775. Email dwnp@gov.bw

Driving in the Chobe Park
One can easily get to the park in a normal car. For game viewing, however, a 4x4 vehicle with good ground clearance is indispensable. The roads mostly have soft sand and are tough. This also applies to driving to the Savuti Marshes in the south-west and to the road to the Moremi Game Reserve and to Maun. One should always be self-sufficient, have enough fuel, provisions and - particularly - water.

Malaria
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for the Chobe Park and for the entire Caprivi area.

Chobe Travel Information

Entry to Botswana
To cross the border from Namibia to Botswana, a declaration from the car rental company is required, authorising the border crossing. If you can't produce such document, you will be sent back. Of course passports and vehicle documents are also required. And a toll for using the road and another one for crossing the border of about 60 Pula (1 Pula=1.25 N$) are to be paid. Animal products, fruit and vegetables may not be imported to Botswana. This is checked thoroughly. Cooler boxes must be opened. Basically everything one brings into Botswana must be declared. The border officials are - compared with those in Namibia - quite unfriendly. One should refrain from trying to bribe them.

Access to the Chobe Park
Kasane AirportThe park is accessed from Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi on the B8 to the border post of Ngoma Bridge (open daily from 8 am to 4 pm). The road runs through the park to Kasane. This small town at the Chobe River with its authentically African character lies at the border to Zimbabwe and is the administrative centre of the region. The Chobe Park is not fenced and one can often see elephants and at night hippos in town. From Kasane it goes on a sign-posted new tar road passing the airport to the Sedudu Gate into the Chobe National Park.

Parks Board Fees in the Chobe National Park
Approximately 120 Pula per person per day plus 50 Pula for the car (1 Pula = 1,25 N$).
