Sidetrips and Extensions of the Main Routes

Extension of the Southern Route: Kalahari
Kalahari lions matingIf you are a keen game watcher, you should extend the travel route through the South of Namibia and plan for this excursion into the Kalahari Desert. Visit the spectacular Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park in South Africa. For this additional tour you need at least 4 more days and - with safari drives in the National Park - you travel another 1000 kilometres.

Day 1: Drive to Twee Rivieren (appr. 360 km)
From Keetmanshoop on the C16 via Aroab to the border in Rietfontein. R31 to Bokspits. Spend the night in Twee Rivieren restcamp.

Day 2: Safari drives along the Nossob riverbed

Extension of the Northern Route: Kaokoland
If you'd like to experience the remote Kaokoveld and visit the semi-nomadic Himba people in the far north-west of Namibia, travel from Khorixas on the C39 and C43 through Damaraland via Palmwag, Warmquelle and Sesfontein to Opuwo. The distance amounts to 420 km and can be done in one day. Spend the night in Opuwo.

HimbaFrom Opuwo we recommend a trip to the Epupa Waterfalls on the Kunene River (appr. 200 km), for which a well equipped 4x4 vehicle is required, like for all drives in Kaokoland. A relatively easy drive - but also only for 4x4 - is the stretch from Opuwo to the south-west, via Orupembe and Purros to Sesfontein. There are guides available in Opuwo. Further information on our Kaokoveld page.

There is the option to drive from Opuwo on the C41 through Owamboland to Oshakati and Ondangwa and from there to the eastern entrances (Namutoni or King Lehale Gate) of the Etosha National Park. Distance appr. 480 km.

The excursion to Kaokoland requires at least 3 more days, whereby 5 or more days would be better. Distance: you'll have to drive at least an additional 1000 kilometres.
