i-con2Ethnic Groups in Namibia : Ovambo

About half of the 2 million Namibians belong to the Ovambo people. Their traditional settlement area lies north of the Etosha Pan, with the town of Oshakati as its centre.

The Ovambo belong to the Bantu peoples and came in the 16th century from east Africa. They form 8 different tribes all of which speak their own Oshivambo dialect.

Traditionally, the Ovambo are small-scale farmers. On the relatively fertile soils of the north, they grow mainly maize, sorghum, millet, pumpkins, beans and melons. They also hold some cattle and goats. The work in the fields is done by the women, while the men look after the animals.
