Vehicle Import
Long-term travellers can bring their own vehicle. Transport from Europe in a container to Walvis Bay or Cape Town costs around 2500 US$. The shipment takes 3 to 4 weeks and you must get a Carnet de Passages from your national AA in advance. It is valid for a year and can be extended for another year. You can unfortunately not sell the vehicle at the end of your journey, but have to take it back to your home country. This also applies to other countries in southern Africa, which all belong to a customs union.
