and Vingerklip

Driving along the C39 from Khorixas to Outjo, you should make the effort to stop off at certain special nature sights. 45 kilometres behind Khorixas, you turn right on to Pad D2743 to the sign-posted Fingerklip. The peculiarly shaped 35 metre high rock lies on the farm Bertram.

VingerklipThe rock was only climbed for the first time in 1970. Since then, many people have been up there and even in 1973, a freeclimber.

One can walk up to the foot of the rock and enjoy the spectacular view over the Ugab Rivier's wide valley with its perfectly smooth table mountains; a dramatic scene that strongly resembles Monument Valley in Arizona.

Petrified ForestPetrified Forest
The Petrified Forest lies 40 kilometres west of Khorixas on the C39. It consits of 300 million year old tree trunks. They are surprisingly well preserved and you can even recognise the year-rings in the trunks. In 1950 the site was proclaimed a National Monument.

TwyfelfonteinTwyfelfontein
You get to Twyfelfontein from the C39. 60 km west of Khorixas you turn left on to the D3254. After 21 km turn right on D3214. Late afternoon is the best time to visit the rock engravings, because then the light is ideal for taking photographs. The parking lot lies close to the spring in the valley. From there you start, accompanied by a guide, the climb to the rock slabs. The sign-posted path is very rugged and solid shoes are required. To see all the rock slabs, you should allow for at least two hours. It can become very hot in Twyfelfontein, and it is advisable to take a waterbottle along. - The most famous engravings are the "Lion Slab", the "Great Elephant" and the "Dancing Kudu".

Organ PipesOrgan Pipes
To get to the basalt columns known as the "Organ Pipes", you go back on the D3214 and turn right (south) onto the D3254. The columns are standing below the road along a gorge. They are up to 5 metres high and were shaped more than 120 million years ago. Lava penetrated the slate stone under high pressure and became eventually exposed by continuous erosion of the slate.

BrandbergBrandberg
The Brandberg, some 150 kilometres south of Khorixas, is a granite massif created by volcanic activity and subsequent erosion.

White LadyMany caves and overhanging rocks can be found in the Brandberg. They contain a great number of rock paintings (more than 48000) as they were once the shelters for Bushmen. The most famous painting is the "White Lady", discovered in 1918 by the landsurveyor Dr. Maack. Despite its name, it does not depict a white woman, as was believed for a long time, but rather a man with his face painted white for ritual.
