Travel Information

Attractions in Karibib
The Henckert Tourist Centre lies in Main Street and cannot be missed. A visit is definitely worthwhile, even if you don't want to buy any jewellery. You can get a lot of information on the mining of precious stones in the region and the processing of the stones while snacks, tea and coffee are available.

Restaurant Recommendation
Springbok Restaurant. The old railway station, opposite the post office hosts a steakhouse, where you get a hearty steak at a good price.

Otjimbingwe
If you have a bit of time and are interested in history, travel some 50 kilometres on the D1992 (gravel road) to Otjimbingwe. The tiny settlement lies at the sandy bed of the Swakop Rivier.

Pulverturm OtjimbingweIn 1849 the Rhenish Mission Society founded here, in the heartland of the West Herero, one of its first missions in Namibia. The old mission church was built in 1867 while the Powder Tower was built in 1872 for protection against the Nama warriors. Between 1886 and 1890, Otjimbingwe - situated on the old ox-wagon route to the coast - was the administrative centre of the German protectorate.

It is recommedable to continue your travel on the D1976 to visit the
Tsaobis Leopard Nature Park where you can see various wild cats and mountain zebras. Thereafter, the C32 will take you back to Karibib.
