Waterberg Wilderness -Otjiwarongo (Namibia)

Explore Waterberg Mountain with its red sandstone plateau, its lush plant life and diverse animal life. Our nature reserve, Waterberg Wilderness, at the south-eastern slope of the mountain, is a 3500 ha paradise for anyone who loves hiking, game and bird-watching and takes an interest in plants. It is also the ideal starting point for excursions into the exciting history of the area and into the culture of the OvaHerero who have lived here for centuries. Waterberg Wilderness offers 3 accommodation options:

Waterberg Wilderness Lodge (in the valley): The lodge, consisting of old farm style buildings, is situated in a valley of the Waterberg massif. In the surrounding garden you find many a spot which beckons you to linger and let your mind wander. Like the open pavilion next to the bricked-in basin of spring water where giant bamboo casts its cooling shade.

Waterberg Plateau Lodge (on a rock terrace): A special feature of this small lodge is its secluded location. It stands proudly on a high terrace, directly below the enormous, vividly red sandstone rocks of the Waterberg Plateau. The lodge's 7 chalets afford sweeping views into the Omaheke below. Here you find absolute tranquillity coupled with utmost comfort. Each of the twin-bedded chalets has a shower/WC, a lounge area and a fireplace for chilly, romantic (winter) evenings. The shady terrace in front of your chalet boasts a plunge pool which you will find wonderfully refreshing during the hot summer months. The fresh spring water also attracts birds and klipspringer (small antelope).

Waterberg Plateau Campsite (in a high-lying valley): In a sheltered high-lying valley we have set up five spacious camping sites shaded by large trees. Each site boasts barbeque facilities and running water. As Waterberg Wilderness is not linked to the national electricity grid yet, the hot water for your shower is supplied by a wood-burning stove which our staffers 'feed' for you in the morning and afternoon. At the covered bar we sell chilled beverages as well as barbeque meat.

Facilities: Large swimming pool with soft spring water. Hiking trails. Game watching on foot accompanied by a tracker. Scenic drives with an open-top vehicle onto the vast plains of the Omaheke. Cultural tours into Hereroland.

Rates: from N$940 DBB pp double, or N$960 single. Camping from N$120 pp. From 1.11.2008 from N$1050 DBB pp double, or N$1070 single.
